I strive to be a positive, perky person everyday. I’ve always seen optimism as a trait to strive for… but it appears many people find constant optimism to be “fake” in some way. I’m here to set the record straight… happiness (optimism) is a CHOICE! That’s right, a choice.
Bad things happen. I can’t change that. All I can do is change the way I react to those events. It’s not always easy, but I’ve found that “looking at the bright side” always pays off in the end.
So here’s my challenge for you today… find the bright side in every bad thing that happens to you today and at the end of the day (or week) take a few minutes to reflect or journal on how this experience has made you feel. Chances are, if you actually did your homework (i.e. took the time to find the positive), you will be feeling more relaxed and at ease.
Not sure where to start? Here’s a few recent examples in my life:
Bad event: A car behind me is tailgating, even though I’m going the speed limit.
The WRONG reaction: Slow down even more to make them angry. (Tempting I know… but keep reading!)
The POSITIVE reaction: Remind yourself of a time you were in a rush/were running late/ had an emergency and get out of the car’s way knowing you just made their life a little easier and avoided raising your own blood pressure for no reason.
Bad event: Your husband’s boss unexpectedly throws a few extra hours worth of work on his plate causing him to stay late at work.
The WRONG reaction: Yell at your husband and/or give him the cold shoulder because he messed up your plans for the evening.
The POSITIVE reaction: Thank your lucky stars for the overtime which will help your family budget and praise your husband for his hard work in bettering your family when he gets home.
